Chilling New Details Revealed in North Carolina Plane Crash That Killed Grammy-Winning Songwriter Brett James

The music world is reel­ing after Gram­my-win­ning song­writer Brett James, 57, trag­i­cal­ly died in a plane crash in North Car­oli­na on Sep­tem­ber 18, along­side his wife, Melody Car­ole, 59, and her daugh­ter, Meryl Wil­son, 28. Accord­ing to a detailed report from the Nation­al Trans­porta­tion Safe­ty Board (NTSB), James was pilot­ing his pri­vate Cir­rus SR22T air­craft and had request­ed a visu­al approach to land at Macon Coun­ty Air­port (MCA) in Franklin, N.C. Flight records show that James depart­ed from John C. Tune Air­port (JCA) in Nashville at 12:41 p.m. local time, intend­ing to reach Franklin for a fam­i­ly vis­it.

Around 2:48 p.m., James report­ed being at 6,800 feet and indi­cat­ed that he “intend­ed to per­form a 360° turn to land” on the run­way. No fur­ther com­mu­ni­ca­tions were received from him. Sur­veil­lance footage cap­tured the plane fly­ing over the run­way before begin­ning a descend­ing left turn. The air­craft con­tin­ued to spi­ral down­ward, even­tu­al­ly enter­ing a tight­en­ing spi­ral before crash­ing into an open field west of Iot­la Val­ley Ele­men­tary School.

Wit­ness­es described a ter­ri­fy­ing scene, report­ing that the plane was fly­ing unusu­al­ly low, rock­ing from side to side, and even­tu­al­ly rolling invert­ed before dis­ap­pear­ing behind the tree line. “It was unlike any­thing I’ve ever seen. The plane was twist­ing and turn­ing in the air, and then it just van­ished,” one local res­i­dent told reporters.

The NTSB con­firmed there were no signs of engine fail­ure. Inves­ti­ga­tors are con­tin­u­ing to exam­ine the recov­ered air­craft to deter­mine the exact cause of the crash.
