Chilling New Details Revealed in North Carolina Plane Crash That Killed Grammy-Winning Songwriter Brett James

The musician died in a plane crash, along with his wife and stepdaughter, on Sept. 18

The music world is reeling after Grammy-winning songwriter Brett James, 57, tragically died in a plane crash in North Carolina on September 18, alongside his wife, Melody Carole, 59, and her daughter, Meryl Wilson, 28. The devastating accident has left fans and colleagues mourning the loss of a prolific songwriter whose work shaped modern country music.

According to a detailed report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), James was piloting his private Cirrus SR22T aircraft and had requested a visual approach to land at Macon County Airport (MCA) in Franklin, N.C. Flight records show that James departed from John C. Tune Airport (JCA) in Nashville at 12:41 p.m. local time, intending to reach Franklin for a family visit.

The NTSB report provides chilling insight into the final moments of the flight. Around 2:48 p.m., James reported being at 6,800 feet and indicated that he “intended to perform a 360° turn to land” on the runway. No further communications were received from him. Surveillance footage captured the plane flying over the runway before beginning a descending left turn. The aircraft continued to spiral downward, eventually entering a tightening spiral before crashing into an open field west of Iotla Valley Elementary School.

Witnesses described a terrifying scene, reporting that the plane was flying unusually low, rocking from side to side, and eventually rolling inverted before disappearing behind the tree line. “It was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The plane was twisting and turning in the air, and then it just vanished,” one local resident told reporters.

The NTSB confirmed there were no signs of engine failure. Investigators are continuing to examine the recovered aircraft to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Brett James’ influence on country music was profound. He co-wrote numerous chart-topping hits, including Kenny Chesney’s “Reality,” and his songwriting was celebrated for its emotional resonance and storytelling. He was known for blending heartfelt lyrics with catchy melodies, leaving an indelible mark on the careers of countless artists. Photographs from events like the BMI & ASCAP’s #1 party honoring Chesney and James for “Reality” capture the close friendships and collaborations he fostered throughout his career.

Tragically, the crash occurred just days after celebrating Wilson’s 28th birthday with family. James is survived by his adult children from a previous marriage to Sandra Cornelius-Little.

As the community in Franklin, N.C., grapples with the sudden loss, tributes from fans and fellow musicians are pouring in. Kenny Chesney described James’ passing as leaving “a void in my life and creativity forever,” reflecting the personal and professional loss felt by so many.

The accident is a somber reminder of the fragility of life, even for those whose work brings joy to millions. Brett James’ legacy will live on through the music he created, but the world mourns not only a brilliant songwriter but also the loved ones he tragically lost alongside him.
