From Red Carpets to Country Roads

The life of Hollywood star Ali MacGraw is a story of dazzling success, resilience, and graceful reinvention. Once a global icon known for her beauty and unforgettable roles, she eventually chose to leave the spotlight and build a new life centered on simplicity, creativity, and inner peace.

Now, at 84, MacGraw lives quietly in a small town, her silver hair reflecting both dignity and strength. Locals respect her privacy, allowing her to enjoy a calm, private life away from the glare of fame.

Born Elizabeth Alice MacGraw in Pound Ridge, New York, on April 1, 1939, her early years were shaped by both artistic influence and financial struggle. Despite challenges at home, her creativity flourished, leading her from Wellesley College to the fast-paced world of New York fashion. She began as an assistant at Harper’s Bazaar, soon catching the attention of photographer Melvin Sokolsky. From modeling covers to commercials, Hollywood soon came calling.
Her breakthrough role in Goodbye, Columbus (1969) earned her a Golden Globe, but it was Love Story (1970) that made her a worldwide sensation. The film’s enormous success brought her an Academy Award nomination and cemented her as one of Hollywood’s brightest stars.

MacGraw’s personal life, however, was as dramatic as her films. Married to Paramount Pictures chief Robert Evans, with whom she had a son, Josh, she later entered into a passionate but turbulent relationship with actor Steve McQueen. Choosing family life over Hollywood, she stepped back from acting, but the relationship ended in 1978.
By the mid-1980s, after struggles with addiction, she sought help at the Betty Ford Clinic, an experience that marked a turning point. She emerged stronger, embracing wellness, yoga, and community work. When her Malibu home was destroyed in a 1993 wildfire, she relocated to a quiet village near Santa Fe, New Mexico—a move that brought her peace and purpose. There she dedicated herself to animal rights advocacy, spiritual practice, and a life of reflection.
Though she stepped away from fame, MacGraw occasionally returned to acting, including a Broadway reunion with Ryan O’Neal in 2006. Today, her greatest joys are her family: her son Josh Evans, now a successful actor and director, and her grandson, Jackson.
Ali MacGraw’s journey—from Hollywood glamour to a simple, peaceful life in New Mexico—shows a woman who embraced change with courage and grace. Through fame, love, loss, and renewal, she has remained true to herself, proving that real beauty lies not in stardom, but in resilience and authenticity.
