Cyndi Lauper Reflects on Aging — “It F—ing Sucks, But the Trick Is Not to Get Too Decrepit”

Cyndi Lauper has always been one of a kind — fearless, funny, and fabulously honest. And even at 71, the pop legend behind Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time is proving that her vibrant spirit hasn’t faded one bit, even if she’s refreshingly real about the not-so-glamorous side of aging.

In a recent interview, Lauper didn’t hold back. “It f—ing sucks,” she said with a laugh. “Like in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, you could even say it blows!” The singer, who’s gearing up for her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour, went on to share her secret to staying strong — and sane — through it all: “The trick is, I guess, not to get too decrepit.”

That mix of humor and honesty is pure Cyndi. She admits she’s never loved birthdays, even recalling that at 38, she didn’t want to get out of bed. “Even at 30, my producer told me, ‘Don’t be ridiculous. Life starts at 30.’”

Now, she takes things one yoga class and one laugh at a time. “What you need to do is take care of yourself,” she said. “I try to force myself to do something — the bike, the walking, the weights, the yoga. Yoga’s great because it puts you in a zone mentally.”

Lauper has always been more than her hits — she’s been a voice for individuality, creativity, and staying true to yourself. From her neon hair and wild outfits in the ’80s to her thoughtful reflections today, she’s embraced every era with authenticity.

“I never tried to live in the past because I know that everything changes in the world and in your life,” she said. “There are so many different chapters that not being able to open a new one is criminal.”

And honestly? She’s right. Whether she was lighting up MTV in 1983 or taking the stage in 2024, Cyndi Lauper has always embodied what it means to live boldly — wrinkles, wisdom, and all.
