Gold­en Globe and Oscar win­ner Jen­nifer Lawrence opened up recent­ly on the pod­cast The Inter­view (host­ed by Lulu Garcia‑Navarro) about whether she should con­tin­ue using her plat­form to com­ment on pol­i­tics — and admit­ted that she isn’t sure she should.

“I don’t real­ly know if I should. … We are so divid­ed.”

Lawrence, who was out­spo­ken dur­ing the first term of Don­ald Trump’s pres­i­den­cy — even writ­ing an op-ed after the 2016 elec­tion warn­ing that “the only peo­ple that feel safe … are white men” — now says her view has shift­ed. Her rea­son­ing: if celebri­ty polit­i­cal com­men­tary doesn’t sway vot­ers, she asks, “What am I doing? I’m just shar­ing my opin­ion on some­thing that’s going to add fuel to a fire that’s rip­ping the coun­try apart.”

Lawrence explained that as an artist, she’s wary of alien­at­ing audi­ence mem­bers who might dis­agree with her views — fear­ing that doing so could ham­per their abil­i­ty to con­nect with her films. “I don’t want to start turn­ing peo­ple off to films and to art that could change con­scious­ness or change the world because they don’t like my polit­i­cal opin­ions,” she said.
Instead of overt com­men­tary, she’s shift­ing her strat­e­gy: “I try to express my pol­i­tics through my work,” she revealed, point­ing to upcom­ing projects from her pro­duc­tion com­pa­ny that tack­le themes like women’s rights, social jus­tice and glob­al con­flict.

This intro­spec­tion coin­cides with a broad­er evo­lu­tion in Lawrence’s pub­lic per­sona. In ear­li­er years, her can­did inter­views and pub­lic slip-ups made head­lines — but she now acknowl­edges, “I was young…and I was just putting myself out there and then the next year I was wav­ing to fans and I tripped…everybody thought that meant every­thing I did was fake.”
Dur­ing the pod­cast she admit­ted that she felt “pre­car­i­ous” at the height of her fame — now she says she’s try­ing to bal­ance authen­tic­i­ty with cau­tion.

Lawrence’s next major role is in the thriller Die My Love, direct­ed by Lynne Ram­say and co-star­ring Robert Pat­tin­son. As she pro­motes the film, her com­men­tary sug­gests a focus on the art and sto­ry­telling rather than the soap-box.

“If I can’t say some­thing that’s going to speak to some kind of peace or low­er­ing the tem­per­a­ture … I’d rather just lis­ten.”
