Seth Meyers Mocks Trump for Calling Him a ‘Deranged Lunatic’: ‘Working Families Are Struggling While You Renovate Your Bathroom’

Seth Mey­ers has fired back at Don­ald Trump after the pres­i­dent called him “the least tal­ent­ed per­son to ‘per­form’ live in the his­to­ry of tele­vi­sion” on Truth Social.

Trump went on about how Mey­ers “talked end­less­ly about elec­tric cat­a­pults on air­craft car­ri­ers” on his late-night show, which made the host “a tru­ly deranged lunatic.”

“You can say I’m untal­ent­ed, you can say I’m deranged, but I’m not the one who talks end­less­ly about cat­a­pults on air­craft car­ri­ers! You’re the one who talks end­less­ly about cat­a­pults on air­craft car­ri­ers!” Mey­ers said on Monday’s episode of NBC’s “Late Night.”

Mey­ers opened the seg­ment with a mon­tage of clips show­ing Trump ref­er­enc­ing cat­a­pults over the past six years. In one 2019 speech alone, Trump used the word eight times.

“Until you said some­thing, I didn’t even know air­craft car­ri­ers had cat­a­pults!” Mey­ers quipped. “I’m not the talk-about-cat­a­pult guy. Just ask my friends. Oh, uh, friends are… how would I describe this to you? They’re like peo­ple who enjoy spend­ing time with you inde­pen­dent of finan­cial and legal favors you can grant them.”

The jokes came days after Trump post­ed on Truth Social accus­ing Mey­ers of being “100% ANTI-TRUMP, WHICH IS PROBABLY ILLEGAL.” Mey­ers shrugged off the remark: “You can say what­ev­er you want about me. That is your First Amend­ment right — which I have too, right? We all have it, right?”

In his lat­est “Clos­er Look,” the Late Night host also poked fun at Trump’s repeat­ed posts about remod­el­ing the Lin­coln Bed­room bath­room amid a gov­ern­ment shut­down. “I say this with sin­cer­i­ty,” Mey­ers said. “I don’t want to talk about cat­a­pults. I don’t want to talk about bath­rooms. And I’m real­iz­ing that I’m start­ing to sound like a deranged lunatic, but that’s what you do to us — you make us talk about what you’re talk­ing about, and then we all sound crazy.”

He closed the seg­ment by piv­ot­ing to pol­i­cy, crit­i­ciz­ing Trump for focus­ing on per­son­al ren­o­va­tions while fed­er­al pro­grams remain unfund­ed. “What we should be talk­ing about instead is the gov­ern­ment shut­down you’re not solv­ing, or the food assis­tance you refuse to fund,” Mey­ers said. “Work­ing fam­i­lies are strug­gling while you ren­o­vate your bath­room and build your ball­room.”

As the audi­ence laughed, Mey­ers teed up his final punch line: “And that’s why your approval rat­ings are in the…” — before cut­ting to a clip of Trump shout­ing, “Toi­let!”
