Michael Wolff Launches Bombshell Lawsuit Against Melania Trump Over Epstein Allegations

Best-sellยญing author and jourยญnalยญist Michael Wolff has filed an exploยญsive lawยญsuit against First Lady Melaยญnia Trump, markยญing an unpreceยญdentยญed legal clash between a jourยญnalยญist and a sitยญting presidentโ€™s wife.

The lawยญsuit, filed in New York State court late Tuesยญday, accusยญes Melaยญnia Trump of attemptยญing to stiยญfle free speech after she allegedยญly threatยญened to sue Wolff for more than $1 bilยญlion. The First Ladyโ€™s legal team had accused Wolff of makยญing โ€œfalse, defamยญaยญtoยญry, and lewd stateยญmentsโ€ conยญcernยญing her relaยญtionยญship with forยญmer financier and conยญvictยญed sex offendยญer Jefยญfrey Epstein.

In her letยญter, attorยญney Aleยญjanยญdro Brito claimed Wolff had made โ€œextremeยญly salaยญciousโ€ alleยญgaยญtions that reached milยญlions worldยญwide โ€” includยญing the claim that Epstein once told assoยญciates Melaยญnia first slept with Donยญald Trump aboard his priยญvate jet.

Wolff Fights Back with Anti-SLAPP Lawsuit

Wolff, co-host of Inside Trumpโ€™s Head โ€” a hit podยญcast proยญduced by The Daiยญly Beast โ€” said Melaniaโ€™s legal threat amounts to a Strateยญgic Lawยญsuit Against Pubยญlic Parยญticยญiยญpaยญtion (SLAPP), designed to intimยญiยญdate and silence jourยญnalยญists.

โ€œI did not want to be in a lawยญsuit, but I also am a jourยญnalยญist and have been one for 40 years,โ€ Wolff said in a stateยญment. โ€œMrs. Trumpโ€™s threatยญened lawยญsuit is what lawyers call a SLAPP suit. Its purยญpose was to intimยญiยญdate and silence me, as Donยญald Trump has done to so many news orgaยญniยญzaยญtions and reporters.โ€

New Yorkโ€™s anti-SLAPP law proยญtects indiยญvidยญuยญals from lawยญsuits intendยญed to chill free speech on matยญters of pubยญlic conยญcern. Wolffโ€™s filยญing seeks puniยญtive damยญages and court authoยญrizaยญtion to quesยญtion both Melaยญnia and Donยญald Trump under oath about their alleged dealยญings with Epstein.

Allegations of Intimidation and Suppression

In the comยญplaint, Wolffโ€™s attorยญneys accuse the Trumps of a patยญtern of legal intimยญiยญdaยญtion aimed at supยญpressยญing uncomยญfortยญable reportยญing.

โ€œThese threatยญened legal actions are designed to creยญate a cliยญmate of fear in the nation so that peoยญple canยญnot freely or conยญfiยญdentยญly exerยญcise their First Amendยญment rights,โ€ the lawยญsuit reads. โ€œThe threats are also intendยญed to shut down legitยญiยญmate inquiry into the Epstein matยญter, which the Trumps and their colยญlabยญoยญraยญtors have at every turn sought to impede and supยญpress.โ€

The filยญing furยญther alleges that Melaniaโ€™s defamaยญtion claims โ€œlack subยญstanยญtial basis in law or in factโ€ and were made โ€œfor the purยญpose of harassยญing, intimยญiยญdatยญing, punยญishยญing, or othยญerยญwise maliยญciousยญly inhibitยญing Mr. Wolffโ€™s free exerยญcise of speech.โ€

The Background and Fallout

Melaยญnia Trumpโ€™s legal team pointยญed to Wolffโ€™s comยญments made on Inside Trumpโ€™s Head in an episode titled โ€œTrumpโ€™s Epstein Scanยญdal Canโ€™t Stop, Wonโ€™t Stop.โ€ Folยญlowยญing her comยญplaint, The Daiยญly Beast retractยญed the relatยญed artiยญcle and removed porยญtions of the podยญcast refยญerยญencยญing the First Lady.

โ€œThe stoยญry did not meet our stanยญdards and has thereยญfore been removed from our platยญforms,โ€ The Daiยญly Beast said in a stateยญment. โ€œWe apolยญoยญgize to the First Lady and our readยญers.โ€

Despite the retracยญtion, Wolff has pressed forยญward, framยญing his lawยญsuit as a defense of jourยญnalยญisยญtic freeยญdom. โ€œAs a reporter, Iโ€™ve nevยญer had the opporยญtuยญniยญty to ask someยญone quesยญtions when their answers have to be givยญen under oath,โ€ he said. โ€œI look forยญward to askยญing Melaยญnia and Donยญald Trump about the matยญters at issue in this case, includยญing their relaยญtionยญship with Jefยญfrey Epstein.โ€

A History of Tension

Donยญald Trump and Epstein were longยญtime assoยญciates before reportยญedยญly falling out around 2004. The renewed scrutiยญny around Epsteinโ€™s conยญnecยญtions to powยญerยญful figยญures conยญtinยญues to ripยญple through U.S. polยญiยญtics.

Wolff, who rose to promiยญnence with his 2018 bestยญseller Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, has writยญten mulยญtiยญple books about Trumpโ€™s presยญiยญdenยญcy and freยญquentยญly appears as a politยญiยญcal comยญmenยญtaยญtor.

In his lawยญsuit, he warns that the Trumps and their โ€œMAGA myrยญmiยญdonsโ€ use legal intimยญiยญdaยญtion to โ€œextract unjusยญtiยญfied payยญmentsโ€ and demand โ€œNorth Koreยญan-style conยญfesยญsions and apoloยญgies.โ€

The White House has not yet comยญmentยญed on the case.
