Marjorie Taylor Greene Breaks with Fellow Republicans on Obamacare Tax Credits: ‘I’m Carving My Own Lane’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene speaks on stage on the first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 15, 2024.

Republican firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene isn’t holding back—this time taking aim not just at Democrats, but also her own party’s leadership. The Georgia congresswoman is demanding action as millions of Americans brace for a potential doubling of Obamacare insurance premiums when a COVID-era tax credit expires at year’s end.

The issue has become a major sticking point in Washington, contributing to the latest government shutdown. Republicans accuse Democrats of trying to quietly extend the subsidy with no reforms—essentially continuing to funnel taxpayer money toward health care for illegal immigrants.

Greene, however, says the real victims will be hardworking American families. In a fiery post on X, she declared she’s “going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year, my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district.”

“No, I’m not towing the party line or playing loyalty games,” Greene wrote. “I’m a Republican and won’t vote for illegals to have any taxpayer-funded healthcare or benefits. I’m AMERICA ONLY! I’m carving my own lane.”

Greene blasted Washington’s lack of leadership, calling out both parties for ignoring the real economic pain facing middle-class Americans.

“Not a single Republican in leadership has talked to us about this or given us a plan to help Americans deal with their health insurance premiums DOUBLING,” she said, adding that “insurance is a scam” and that Americans have been left holding the bill for years of failed government policy.

According to data cited by Greene from KFF, when the “enhanced premium tax credits” expire, Obamacare premiums could more than double. These credits, first introduced during the pandemic and later extended through the Inflation Reduction Act, significantly expanded eligibility and government subsidies—even for individuals making over 400% of the federal poverty line.

Greene’s outrage comes amid her ongoing criticism of U.S. foreign aid to Israel and Ukraine, which she argues diverts billions away from struggling American families.

“Our country sent $30 billion to Israel in 2024 alone, killing countless innocent children, and sent HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS to Ukraine,” she wrote. “I voted NO to all of that. America has funded the Ukrainian government, pensions, and businesses during this stupid war we should have nothing to do with.”

She continued, blasting Congress for what she calls a betrayal of the American taxpayer:

“All our country does is fund foreign wars while Americans can’t afford their own health care. It’s absolutely shameful, disgusting, and traitorous.”

Greene vowed to work on a plan focused solely on American citizens:

“NO FUNDING FOR ILLEGALS AND ANY BENEFITS FOR THEM, BUT WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE INSANE COST OF INSURANCE FOR AMERICANS. I’m here in Washington this week to meet with anyone who is AMERICA ONLY and will work with me on a plan for AMERICANS ONLY.”

Meanwhile, Senate Republican Whip John Thune acknowledged the issue but blamed Democrats for creating the mess.

“They put the expiration date in place. They expanded these COVID-era tax credits, and now they want Republicans to bail them out,” Thune said. “We’re not going to have that conversation until the government gets opened up.”

Thune emphasized that the program needs reform, calling the ACA tax credits “rife with fraud, waste, and abuse.”

“They’re nothing more than subsidies to insurance companies,” he said. “There’s no income cap—you can make half a million dollars and still get federal assistance. It’s desperately in need of reform.”

As the shutdown drags on, Greene’s message is clear: stop funding foreign wars and start fixing the problems facing real Americans—the taxpayers footing the bill.
